This was only a couple of years ago; there has been outrage about this that has reached major news outlets who broadcast worldwide and Blackface has been dehumanizing black people for over a century. In this day and age of technology and ease of information it's not nearly as plausible for a whole country of people to say they just didn't know. I highly doubt that China, Korea, and Japan's habit of making dark skinned characters with afros and big red lips the target of jokes is not a harmless coincidence considering the existence of blackface. Asian culture is just as ignorant and anti-black as Racist American culture; that's the truth. There is absolutely a deep-seeded discriminatory reason for this in Japan; they just won't admit and/or accept it. This is wrong, period. There's no justification.
